On the whole, over a two year period, the pharmaceutical industry did see cuts, higher than stated above.
But, with Large Pharmaceutical concerns comes many representatives, but also executives in marketing, sales, training, research, finance, legal, medical affairs, etc., which spread this figure over the entire corporate structure, not just the sales force. Many with early retirement, some with handsome severance packages that one would crave.   Some companies such as Pfizer and Wyeth are going to see drops, but your still going to see geographic openings and as in the blogs below and companies listed, but also large pharma, for there is always turnover, and in this industry 8-15% will happen every year.  Regardless of all the studies, outlooks, personal observations, and outlook by individuals you network with, never forget, THERE ARE OVER 1000 OPENINGS in pharmaceutical and biotech sales across the United States today on March 9th.   These are in first level field sales, hospital representatives, biotech representatives, District and Regional Management, Corporate Account Executives, Clinical Liasons, and more.   There is no excuse for you not to be in the process of an interview after reading Insight and putting in two hours a day on your search, no excuse at all, one can not blame the economy, only their attitude and strength to get out there and do what is necessary and secure your offer!

Fiercebiotech and Fiercepharmaceutical are must free daily subscriptions for the individual entering for their first job or the 13 year veteran.  You must stay current with the industry, know the climate, know other companies, know what is in their pipeline, know how to interview and practice no matter how many years you have or don't have.  Someone with 12-25 years consistently make the mistake of believing their years of experience will transfer to an easy interview process, and when thrown back in the mix, often fall flat, for they are not prepared, have not done all their research and quite frankly, feel that they have an edge on someone without experience.  Not so, as many have found, so at $50.00 off, make sure if your the new grad from college or the veteran pharmaceutical executive that you have a hard copy of Insight into a Career in Pharmaceutical Sales on your bookshelf for career.
At $9.99 and $3.99 shipping and handling, this 175 page book will have you in the top 1% of candidates.  That's less than $15.00 and with the two included audio CD's, it's less than two people going to see a movie.  125 questions and answers, that do not change each year and another 25 plus questions you must ask during those 3 to 5 interviews.  if your taking your search serious, be prepared how to handle every step, with follow up letters (not emails), and tips to secure that opening.

But, the information is very similar to what is written by me in Insight into a Career in Pharmaceutical Sales, again, available while final hard copies of the 10th anniversary edition and 2 Audio CD's remain at near cost.  Only $9.99, read the reviews on site, review the reviews of the last 12 years on Amazon.com.  With thirty years in the pharmaceutical industry with 20 of those hiring representatives, I know what makes a candidate successful in the interview process.  With over 1000 success stories sent to me, I know that knowledge is learned by this 175 page book and audio CD's (which you must repeat over and over, to be prepared for any question that will be thrown at you in any interview).   After these remaining copies are gone, the next hard copy edition will not be available until late fall of 2011 (when annual reports from over 50 pharmaceutical companies can be read and other resources needed to write an updated book).   If your not happy with your purchase, as always, I let a customer have their money back and they can keep the book.  As taught being starting as a pharma rep in the late 1960's and ending in 1998 as a Director,  demonstrating class and professionalism with your clients will always pay off over the long term, one must take care of them, put them on a pedestal, always, whether you believe your right or the client is wrong.  The customer is always right!
